Stewardship 2020 Campaign Co-chairs: Paula Phelan and Hal Houston

Our co-chairs, Paula and Hal, have shared their stories about the role St. Mark’s Church has played in their lives. They have been connected to the church over the years, finding ways to engage in ministry and experiencing joy in being a member of the St. Mark’s community.

Paula Phelan

St. Mark’s is family.  As a lifelong member, St. Mark’s has been an integral part of my life during my happiest and saddest moments and everything in between.

From Sunday school, EYC and Camp Weed, marriage, baptisms and confirmations, to the funerals of my beloved grandparents, father and stepmother, St. Mark’s has been a sanctuary.  This church has provided love, support and healing through the love of Jesus Christ.

I’ve been fortunate to have been involved in many areas of lay ministry over the years, most recently serving on the Renovation Team for Children’s and Youth Ministry.  Working with a group of dedicated parishioners to build the infrastructure of these ministries has been a positive experience, making me appreciate even more the skills and resources that we at St. Mark’s possess.  I look forward to serving alongside Hal as co-chairs of the 2020 Stewardship Campaign, and witnessing the transforming generosity of God’s love.

Hal Houston

St. Mark’s is a place I am proud to call home.  It is a place where we connect with family and friends, have a history to look back on and a future to look forward to.

For me, attending St. Mark’s defined many of my childhood memories and friendships and provided a spiritual foundation for the rest of my life.  As Heather and I began our professional careers and returned to Jacksonville, we reconnected with a legacy of commitment and service by joining this church where my grandparents attended and served for many years.  My grandparents inspired us to give back to St. Mark’s.

Heather and I cherish the benefits of worshipping in an intergenerational community, especially every Sunday we are able to spend with Granny.  Now with a toddler and infant at home, this church community is even more important.  Throughout the seasons of life, we mark both the important milestones and the daily disciplines of life at St. Mark’s, from our Confirmation and Reception and the Baptisms of our children to weekly services and committee engagement.  St. Mark’s continues to shape our family as we seek to grow together in the image of Christ.
