“The Jesus on Your Mug” - 5pm The River Service

Jun 21, 2026    The Rev. Billy Cerveny

This sermon challenges listeners to examine whether they have created a comfortable, customized version of Jesus that fits their preferences rather than embracing the real Christ revealed in Scripture . Drawing from Matthew 10, it emphasizes that Jesus is inherently divisive because His exclusive claim to be the only way to the Father confronts humanity’s desire for autonomy and self-determination. The message also explores how God’s grace is equally offensive to both the self-righteous, who want to earn God’s favor, and the self-condemning, who believe they are beyond God’s love. Ultimately, the sermon calls believers to stop looking at themselves—whether in pride or shame—and instead fix their eyes on the crucified and risen Jesus, who speaks both truth and grace with transforming power.
